Coonawarra

Varietal: Cabernet Merlot
Current Vintage: 2015
Bottle Size: 750ml
Case Size: 6

Tasting Notes:

This Cabernet Merlot imparts a backbone of cassis overlayed with plum fruits from Merlot. There is an intriguing element of forest-floor complexity with a fine round palate showing fruit sweetness. A medium to full bodied in structure, it has fine, silky tannins and a great persistence of flavour. Very approachable on release or enjoy it over the next 8 or so years as it matures.

90 points - Huon Hooke (2015 Vintage) says
Very deep red/purple colour with a bright, fresh, cassis bouquet which shouts of the Cabernet varieties. Mulberry and blueberry. The wine is firm and a touch astringent, with some acidity which sticks out and hardens up the tannins. It needs time and - especially - food. Good potential.

Wine Region:

Leconfield was established in 1974 by pioneering oenologist Sydney Hamilton who, at 76 years of age, had the dream to produce the classic Australian red wine. Leconfield McLaren Vale Shiraz provides a sibling to the classic Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, for which the estate is famous, the Coonawarra Merlot and its recent new addition, Cabernet/Merlot.

The inherent fruit vibrancy of the wine comes from our 'Farm' block. Fruit is harvested at night to take advantage of the naturally cool temperatures, then fermented on skins for a week. A portion of the wine was barrel fermented to integrate the fruit and oak and racked several times to aid natural clarification, integrate the oak and to soften and complex the tannin structure. The fruit, sourced fruit from estate vineyards, has been selected to give the depth for which this wine is renown.

Food Pairing:

Enjoy his Cabernet with slow cooked shoulder of lamb with rosemary and garlic.
