At the time of Tahbilk's very early beginnings in 1860, one of Tahbilk's founding fathers, John Pinney Bear, placed an advertisement in leading newspapers across Australia asking for 'One Million strong vine cuttings'. His advertisement was reasonably successful with Tahbilk receiving around 600,00 cuttings and by the end of 1860, 26 hectares of vines planted - including Shiraz.
The 2016 Shiraz has aromas of earth, spice and blackcurrant which are evident on a rustic, savoury palate of dark berry and plum fruits with hints of black pepper. An ideal partner to gourmet barbequed meats.
Vineyards were irrigated at budburst in September of 2014, and continued through Spring where there were typically warm, blustery Spring days, and then forecasts of showers and high humidity. This pattern continued through December and January, but the vineyards remained healthy and disease free - amazing considering the forecast conditions! Vintage started early (again!) and fruit ripened quickly, leading to another compressed and busy vintage. However a lull in mid-March saw the last of the whites safely picked and we started taking in reds in perfect autumn conditions and at optimum ripeness. Flavours are bright and concentrated, it looks like being a very good year.
Located in Victoria, approximately 90 kilometres east of Melbourne. The area's relatively cool climate makes it particularly suited to the production of high-quality Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sparkling and more equated with a Burgundy style climate.
